The documentary tells the story of the life of women shepherds in Italy and is the result of a journey of more than two years, about 17,000 km travelled and 100 interviews with women aged between 20 and 102 years.
The figure of the shepherd, in the imagination and in the most widespread symbology, has always been associated with the male gender. But the goat breeding sector is becoming feminized, more and more women choose to carry out this traditionally patriarchal work. The shepherd women engaged daily in their activity often live alone, but also with companions and with their family, fully involved in the social and economic activities of the community in which they live.
The film tells the story of these women through the personal experience of the director who lived with them for a few days, immersing himself intimately and deeply in their daily lives. The bonds of friendship and affection that have been created have therefore become the narrative line, intimate and spontaneous, that introduces us to the motivations of the protagonists, the difficulties encountered and the satisfactions obtained.
The documentary is therefore a representation of this unusual world, where the distinctive feminine approach implies taking care of animals, protecting their extraordinary biodiversity and together with this, preserving the majestic Italian landscapes at high altitudes.
